In 2003, I mapped the San Rafael Wilderness of the Santa Barbara Backcountry; I enjoyed it so much that I had to do it again. So in early 2007, I began work creating a map of the Dick Smith and Matilija Wilderness areas. I hiked, backpacked, bicycled, and drove all the trails and roads in and around the Santa Barbara and Ventura backcountries. Every weekend and vacation, my three dogs (Bean, Bailey, & Ben) and I headed on a different trip through snow, wind, and even fire, recording trail conditions, mileages, and interesting features. 18 months later, I finished compiling what I feel is an excellent resource for exploring the stunning diversity of our local mountains. No matter if you enjoy deep swimming pools, snow covered peaks, rolling meadows of wildflowers, hard core expeditions, or just a few hours of peace and tranquility, whatever you may be seeking, I hope this map will help guide you on your way. Have fun.....

Due to the remoteness of the trailheads that access the Dick Smith Wilderness, it is far less visited than its neighboring wilderness areas. This solitude and isolation are a key component of its personality. Whether you are swiming in the amazing pools that this area is famous for, or climbing 6500+ft Madulce Peak, you most likely will have the trails and camps to yourself.

Most of the Dick Smith burned in the 2007 Zaca Fire. While a good portion of the vegetation is in regrowth stage, the opportunity for exploration is all time. This is due to the fact that much of the once suffocating chaparral is no longer impeding the trails and cross country routes. This is a great time to get to know and see first hand how our backcountry regenerates after such a dramatic fire event.

The Matilija Wilderness is located within an hours drive of downtown Ventura and just a few minutes from Ojai. Its a popular destination for dayhikers and in my opinion is one of the special gems of the Southern Los Padres. While its close proximity to civilization make it a great option for a day trip, the Matilija also offers great weekend backpacking options. The main Matilija Trailhead gives access to four trails that lead into the wilderness area. Literally days and days worth of exploration options radiate from these trails. You just need to make the time and have the passion to venture further than a days worth of hiking.

The Matilija has never been mapped to the level of detail and scale of this map. So whether you are a seasoned veteran of the Matilija pools and falls, or are a first timer looking for a quick escape from your daily routine, this map is worth checking out.

In addition to the Matilija and Dick Smith Wilderness areas this map covers many of the adjacent backcountry regions. The map spans from the SB front country to the Cuyama foothills, and from the Ojai Highway 33 corridor to South Fork Station in the San Rafael Wilderness.

The map features OHV and motorcycle designated trails, and covers many of the famous local mountain bike trails (including Little Pine Mountain, Santa Ynez Mountains, and the SB and Ojai frontcountries).

If you can spare a few days or even a few weeks, there are many backcountry loop and shuttle trip options available for the experienced backpacker. This map serves as a great resource for planning extended packing trips. Feel free to contact me should you have any questions about potential trips or trail conditions:
